A 50-year-old man experienced a sudden loss of muscle function in the left side of his face. In addition, he experienced pain behind his left ear and some changes in taste. Stroke was ruled out as the remainder of his motor function was preserved, and he was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. Given his symptoms, please explain the following: 1. What cranial nerve VII muscle fibers are responsible for the loss of muscle function on the left side of his face, pain behind his ear, and the changes in his taste? Look at Table 5-3 if you need help. 2. Is this condition a lower motor neuron or upper motor neuron issue? Please explain why you think so.
