Consumers were often seen with a focus ontheir weaknesses and illnesses which lead to the further disempowerment and stigmatisation ofpeople with mental illness.The strength-based approach is much less interested in what is ‘not right’ with the person, as itaims to attend to the part of the person that is well (Rapp, 1997). Rather than trying to correctweaknesses, strength-based practitioners are encouraged to enhance existing strengths andthus move the person to a greater sense of well-being. The main requirement for practitioners isa commitment to empowerment and collaboration with consumers and to work with theawareness of how focus of morbidity and weaknesses can negatively impact on the person intheir movement towards recovery.People are also seen in the full context of their lives and as part of their communities whichprovide them with resources of support and increased well-being.
