GERD DAM FINAL ASSESSMENTThe Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)In 2011, Ethiopia launched the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam(GERD) on the Blue Nile in a place called Guba, One of the most controversial projects inAfrica. Not only the scope, the design, the budget and the duration represented majorconcerns in the GERD project, but also the conflicting interests among the keystakeholders, the non-technical consequences including the political, financial andadministrative and the social aspects are of great concern. The technical aspectsincluding the project ill design, lack of local experienced staff and contractors to performand manage the project, the changing scope (the filling duration of its reservoir, thetechnical risks, the filling period and the flux of the Nile River which all contributed to thecomplexity of the GERD project. Research also showed that the impact of the GERDproject is influencing the water security of both Egypt and Sudan which in turns affectingthe farmers, the social structure around the deltas and therefore the socio-economy ofthese countries. There are ample of documents and studies been published with detailed literature whichyou require to review and critically understand to build a good knowledge about theproject context. You need to respond to the tasks below.PART A: Group Written assignment: (35%)Due Date: Week 11 Monday (24 May 2021) 11:59 pm AESTThis assessment comprises two parts: Part (i): the written group case study is worth 30% and Part(ii): the individual student presentation (see point 9 below) comprises 20% towards the overallassessment. You will be assessed on the extent and quality to which it meets each of the followingcriteria.1- Assessment Group Report:• Groups comprise 3-4 students. Groups can be randomly allocated by the Unit Coordinatorwho may vary the group size and composition.• Students are expected to actively participate, respond and engage in this group assessmentto maximise active learning.• Students will be called for an oral examination (as part of group assessment) and presenttheir work individually. Failing to satisfy the presentation requirements may lead to failing theassessment regardless.• The primary purpose of this assessment item is to help you to define your thinking and toclassify the tools and techniques related to the complex project management field.• The secondary purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to enhance yourteamwork skills, analysis, critical thinking and written communication skills; particularly in theareas of argument development and academic writing.• Note each group needs to submit ONE file only through a nominated leader.Structure• Your submission should follow the standard academic writing of a reviewreport.• Reports should be a maximum of 4,000 words (including references). Reportsexceeding the maximum word limit (i.e. 4,000 words) by more than 5% will bepenalized. You can have less words but not more!• The report should be structured as a review report with clear and coherent abstract, introduction, thorough literature review, methodology, results, and discussion.• The abstract should summarise your findings in no more than 250 words.• The introduction should introduce the report and include brief relevant informationabout the case study as well as the objectives.• The literature should present the evidence you have collected to support yourargument, detailing information about the case and relevant previous literature. Itshould highlight the complexity aspects, the uncertainties, and any other relevantinformation. The literature review should be integrated into the article.• The methodology should show what has been done to analyse this case and howyou undertook the research/analysis.• The results should present the findings and may include critical discussion. Aconclusion section should also be included.• Each member should attach a sheet showing their contribution.2- PART B: Oral Presentation (15%)Due Date: 28 May 2021, 11:59 pm AESTNOTE: For the oral presentation part, EACH student is required to submit a separateINDIVIDUAL DIFFERENT PPT file of their own. This will be followed by an OralPresentation.PPT and oral presentations will be marked separately, and various marks will be grantedupon the criteria of that assessment task. TASKMARKSLiterature Review:Provide an in-depth literature review about the GERD dam with the main reflection on complexity aspects.Literature review means you are aware of the GERD dam, have reviewed the available literature materials and identifiedthe complexity in a well-structured flow. Your rich literature will mark your effort. You need to use an academic writingstyle with proper referencing (Harvard reference style is recommended, a minimum of 12 reference)Be mindful of any misconduct!10Complexity FactorsIdentify the complexity factors within the GERD project. Do you agree it is a complex project and why?Referring to the 5 complexity factors in Chapter1,Which factor could be more significant in the case of GERD dam and why (use examples from the GERD case)?7Stakeholder matrixDraw the Stakeholder matrix of the GERD and label all possible stakeholders in the GERD dam by presenting them onthe matrix. This means you need to be aware of the power and interest of each. Justify why do you think so?7External Varieties:List THREE external variances affecting this project (Vd referring to Ashby law)What are the opponent resisting measure (Vr) could be in this case. You need to present a match each Vd with a Vr7Complexity levelWhat is the complexity level of the GERD project? Use one of the evaluations methods.Hint: you may try to consult your peers to get a wight of the scorecard (Keep records of the raw data)7Complexity characteristics histogramReferring to Week 5, Re-draw the complexity characteristics histogram whilst assigning relevant weights referringto theGERD project. You need to plot these characteristics and give updated weights (referring to the GERD case)Group these characteristics into the FOUR complexity types and show the relative weight of each complexity type8 Structural /Dynamic complexity matrixOn a combination Structural /Dynamic complexity matrix, Place the GERD dam (which Type of projects do you think itis? And why?). Give example from the GERD dam project12Dreyfus modelAfter defining the skills required to manage the GERD dam, and referring to Week 7, Dreyfus model explain the level ofeach skill and why do you think this level is best suited the complexities in there.Use a graph to support your answer (Chart diagram shows the group of skill within the same levels.10Butterfly Effect:In week 9, you learnt about Butterfly effect, how do you view this in the GERD projectDiscuss the leadership style impact on the GERD complexity12Conceptual Hurdles: Do you agree that using previous knowledge from other disciplineswould be helpful in reducing the complexity level within the GERD10RESPORT STRUCTURE AS INSTRUCTED:This is of great importance to follow the structure of academic review and provide all sections as required. This includes an Abstract, Introduction, literature review… . See the unit profile for more details on the structure10Total100
