(CGL) is one ofthe world’s largest consumer goodsfirms, with well- known brands ofdetergent, toothpaste, and disposablenappies (diapers). CGL is organisedaround five business sectors: laundryand cleaning, paper goods, beautycare, food and beverages, and healthcare. To the management of CGL, thismakes a lot of sense. Dividing such alarge organization along product lines allows each business sector to developproduct, pricing, and promotion policies, as well as supply chain strategies, whichare independent of one another.However, to the distributors and retailers who are CGL’s direct customers, the viewis quite different. Each of these customers has to deal with five separate billing andlogistics processes—one for each business sector (Figure 1).Figure 1:Business StructureThe business structure means that the customer is not only forced to use fivedifferent billing processes, five different sets of terms and conditions but they alsohave no opportunity to get volume price discounts based on their overall volume ofbusiness with CGL. Each business sector uses its own logistics processes, whichresults in small, uncoordinated shipments and what the customers believe areinflated transportation costs compared to the competitors of CGL.This structure creates a wide range of problems: CGL does not allow customers to purchase all CGL brands together fordelivery on the same truck. Some customers might go several days without receiving an order, only tohave several trucks with CGL orders arrive at the receiving dock at the sametime on the same morning. Different product categories are shipped on different trucks with differentinvoices. The trade promotions process is so complex that more than 27,000 orders amonth require manual corrections. The separate pricing and promotion policies, coupled with non-coordinatedmanagement of logistics activities across the five business sectors, resultingin as many as nine prices per item and order quantities of less-than-fulltruckload.Additionally, CGL has a corporate strategy whichis committed to providing consumer quality andvalue, not just in the short term but forgenerations to come. CGL recognise that toachieve these objectives they need to work withsupply chain partners who share CGL’sstandards in respect of corporate citizenshipwhich include diversity, the environment andsustainability. CGL, however, recognise that ithas difficulties in communicating and monitoringcorporate citizenship performance in respect ofthe suppliers with whom they work. CGL hasalso recently noted an increase in investorenquiries relating to the company’s corporatecitizenship performance.As a general guide, the following criteria will be used as a basis for marking the various sections ofeach question answered.
