The student will develop theseskills through a piece of applied research, in which the student identifies and produces a solution toa research question, drawing on skills developed in both the Research Methods unit and in subjectspecialist units (your chosen project MUST relate to your course of study and this should beapproved by your supervisor).The project is expected to have a significant element of innovation and challenge, developing new orenhanced data, applying or developing methods or tools to solve complex problems and/or addingto the overall knowledge base for the subject area. The project may include the development of newtechnology, but this must be part of the process of contributing to the development of knowledgesuch as new datasets or providing a solution to a problem. The development of technology in its ownright is not the primary focus of this project.The project is divided into two parts for administrative purposes – the Pilot Project and the ResearchProject modules. This enables you to submit your preliminary chapters early and get feedback totake into the main project and identify areas which need further work.The project should however be viewed as a single overall project, with the pilot project moduleforming two chapters of your eventual MSc thesis.Assessment TaskThe Pilot Project – Introduction and BackgroundThe pilot project is designed to ensure that the student develops their research appropriately andcomprises the first part of the project work which contributes to the MSc award. The student willidentify a research topic, develop a research question and agree it with a supervisor.For the first element of assessment, the student will undertake a background research to supportthe project and will write an Introduction and Background chapter of the dissertation. This must setout the problem to be studied, define a clear research question (and hypotheses for testing if this isappropriate), and then outline the technical context for the study, including a summary of existingresearch and data relevant to the topic.The function of the introduction and background is to enable the reader to be able to understandthe problem and the possible solutions, as well as existing approaches which have attempted tosolve this or similar problems. It should be written so that a technically literate reader who is not asubject specialist can understand the decisions taken later in the project such as the selectedresearch methods.As this is a background chapter, rather than a specific literature review, this does not need toincorporate a systematic review approach. However, if the student wishes to use a systematicprocess they may do, and it is generally considered good practice.DELIVERABLEThe report must be submitted in Adobe PDF or MS Word format only with machine readable text(i.e., not saved as an image) – A non-machine-readable document such as images will be consideredan automatic Fail as such document will not meet the academic misconduct scrutiny process.The report should be formatted with suitable margins (3 cm from the edge) to allow for later bindinginto the thesis.The pages of text, including inserted illustrations and appendices, must be numbered consecutivelyat the bottom centre of each page. You should use size 10-to-12-point font with 1.5 line spacing.
