You are interested in exploring your areaof work in public health to see how successful the implementations of policies or proposed strategies have been onpractice, provision and financial cost.ThemeThe theme for use with Unit 18 is: Health, Safety and Safeguarding through the LifespanA key responsibility of the Healthcare Practitioner is to contribute to the health, safety and safeguarding of all serviceusers in their care. But what does this mean? In an ever-changing, increasingly complex health and social careenvironment, our understanding of the role, duties and responsibilities of the practitioner in protecting service userscontinues to evolve. One thing we are sure of is that evidence-based strategies to health, safety and safeguardingcontribute significantly to improving the health and wellbeing outcomes for service users, their families and 2 practitioners alike. The implications of ineffective, inefficient, poorly-researched or out-of-date approaches toprotection can be very serious – not only affecting the experience, health and wellbeing, and outcomes of service usersand their families, but also practitioners’ own wellbeing and safety, professional opportunities and career. To beeffective in their role, it is crucial that the healthcare practitioner actively recognises this and embeds a continuousenquiry-based approach to their work in protecting service users; including respecting and upholding service users’agency, views and rights in this regard. This is not only to be responsive to changes in legislation, policy and guidancebut also to take an active role in their own personal and professional growth and development, and to support thecontinuous improvement of the services they provide. In the context of the health, safety and safeguarding of serviceusers and others, the healthcare practitioner should be rigorous and critical in their approach, be willing to challengeand question themselves and others towards informing and improving practices in their work. This developmentalapproach is most effective when underpinned by evidence and the healthcare practitioner should utilise the principlesand practice of research in their day-to-day practice in the protection of service users.Students are to choose their own research topic for this unit. Strong research projects are those with clear, well focusedand defined objectives. A central skill in selecting a research objective is the ability to select a suitable and focusedresearch objective. One of the best ways to do this is to put it in the form of a question. Students should be encouragedby tutors to discuss a variety of topics related to the theme to generate ideas for a good research objective.The range of topics discussed could cover the following: Tackling neglect and abuse in health and social care settings. Independence and risk when providing healthcare in adult social care settings. Different approaches to safeguarding adults in an integrated care system. The impact of funding on being able to safeguard adults effectively.Students are to submit as evidence for the unit in addition to their project findings, the research proposal and ethicsform. The research proposal sets out the plan for how the students will achieve the intended research objective(s) andshows whether the objective(s) will be feasible, ethical and achievable in the time scale. It sets out how secondaryresearch supports the research objective(s), how the research will be conducted, how the research will be evaluated.Students will need to gain ethical approval before commencing their research; this will be discussed with the tutorduring the research proposal.Proposal Deadline to be submitted to unit leader till 07/04/2021What you must do 3 Part 1Consider the development of a methodical, ethical, reliable and valid research proposal as the foundation for theproject. The proposal should be agreed with your tutor prior to undertaking any research. Proposal and ethical formsshould also be agreed and completed. An ethics form must be submitted prior to completion of research as part of theresearch proposal.The project topic should reflect personal interest in a specialism and should allow for a sufficient degree of researchthrough the existence of adequate background materials.The framework of your proposal should address a specific research problem or question. This can be stated as aresearch question, objectives or hypothesis.As guidance, a good project proposal and project title should have an existing body of literature or source material thatcan be reviewed. In addition, it should extend the current line of learning, lending itself to further rigorous exploration.You should decide on appropriate research methods and select an appropriate sample. Finally, provide a literaturereview that identifies the background and conceptualisation of your proposed area of study.
