AssessmentFor the assessment, you will be required to identify and propose an innovation that can helpimprove an aspect of project management practice or processes within a given context.There will be a need to carry out additional reading and research to identify a process orpractice in the management of projects which needs some improvement. The problem areaidentified can be based on real-life experience although additional reading helps you groundyour idea and find precedence to support the credibility of your propositions. You will alsobe required to outline how this innovation will/can be implemented in a particular context(e.g. within a project, programme, an organisation etc). Innovation in project managementdoes not refer to invention, but has a broader definition of development of existing ideas andapplication of existing theory to new situations. You are particularly recommended to look atthe articles in the reader defining innovation and looking at the innovation process.The module has two separate components (component A & B): component A, which is aseminar presentation to staff and peers constitutes 25% of the assessment; andcomponent B, which is a written report forms the remaining 75% of the assessment and itbuilds on the presentation. To pass the module you will need an overall module markof at least 50%, and also you need a minimum of 50% in each of the two components.Presentation (25% of module mark)The first step is to propose and justify an innovative development or improvement of existingproject management practice which you believe would be effective, implementable andsustainable. This can either be:the introduction of a newORexisting idea into your workplace, a workplace you have worked in or a project, thatwould be an improvement on existing project management practice and would berelevant to other organisations. If you do not have relevant work experience, thenthis can be based on research and reading.Your proposition may be based on sound analysis of the effectiveness or efficiency ofcurrent processes or practices using an appropriate evaluation method.Examples of areas you could consider have been given in Appendix A of module handbook.The presentation is in a sense a progress report and also acts as a ‘Business Case’ for yourproposal so you should ensure that it addresses all of the criteria noted below.The innovation or development needs to be given a name and analysed by using theinnovation outline in Appendix B of module handbook. You must submit this pro formaby email to your allocated tutor by 09 June 2021 so that your tutor will approve your topicand assist you in further developing your innovation to suit your interest and/or experience.Even if you have no experience in PM then this exercise gives you an opportunity to be moreimaginative in your approach and you will not be disadvantaged by using case studies thatyou research to give a context for the implementation of your idea. You will need to carefullyresearch your proposed innovation and produce some evidence to show that you havedetermined its key strengths, weaknesses and barriers to implementationYou will be required to present the innovation and its rationalisation under controlledconditions to your tutors and peers, for which you have 10 minutes. You must also presentcitations to support your research. You will be asked questions and given individualfeedback. You will need to be present during your group’s session (4-8 people/group) in the5th block.Please note that you should create your presentation in MS PowerPoint format (preferred)and send to module leader as well as keep copy for online presentation.You are also required to provide a 1-sided executive summary to supplement yourpresentation/oral delivery. A further page should be used to provide a full bibliographical listof your academic references. This should be submitted via email to module leader togetherwith your presentation before the presentation.At the end of your presentation, please be prepared to note down the tutors’ verbalfeedback which will be provided to help you make improvement for your report. You willremember it better this way and it will be timely for immediate use. It is very important thatyou make notes of your feedback because the tutors may not provide written feedback.Presentation Assessment CriteriaThe following main criteria will be used and applied to assess your work and level ofprogress:• Definition/description of the innovation and the quality of theoretical base of theinnovation including some references indicating your knowledge of the subject area.The innovation must be given a name (40% of marks)• Credibility of rationale and arguments for and against introduction of the innovation(30% of marks)• Ability in oral presentation skills to engage your audience and answer questions(30% of marks)Please note that this is an assessment of your progress and therefore you need not havecompleted your literature review or report at this stage, but you should be able todemonstrate a good grasp of your chosen innovation and the theory, the impact and thebarriers.In order to pass (i.e. 50 – 59%) you will have:• defined your innovation and give some rationale and had it approved• demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the innovation by reference to casestudies and/or research which are relevant to the area• show how this idea is new/development to the industry/organisation/projects involvedand/or could be developed• show why you think it should be successful and what drives it• show evidence of being prepared for the presentation, with the ability to engage theaudience, keep time and answer questions relevant to the innovationIn order to gain a merit (60 – 69%) you will have also• been able to explain your idea imaginatively and well• have developed a deeper awareness of the theory and empirical evidenceunderpinning your innovation• provided good evidence of coverage of the impact of such an innovation by referenceto drivers and barriers• communicated effectively and kept audience interestIn order to gain a distinction (i.e. ≥ 70%) you will have covered the above points, but inaddition you will have• given a particularly creative or well developed idea in the given context• developed a deep awareness of the theory and empirical evidence underpinning yourinnovation• given compelling arguments for its strengths and weaknesses• shown excellent ability in communicating your ideas and building a persuasiveargument.To fail (i.e. < 50%) you will have• not had your idea approved by the tutor• poorly defined the innovation or development of existing practice• provided poor or little evidence of the depth and breadth of your reading andresearch into the innovation• not tried to rationalise why it is relevant to improving practice• not communicated effectively in both the oral presentation and executive summary.Final Report (75% of module mark)The report is handed in after the presentation and to allow you the opportunity to build uponthe work you have undertaken to produce the presentation. In principle you need to think ofthis as a report to the senior managers in an organisation. You should aim to re-rationaliseand give evidence (theory) for your idea, take account of the feedback you have received forthe presentation and articulate the practical steps for introducing the innovation (i.e. itsimplementation) so it would be effective. Consider the implementation of your innovation asa project thus you could present the elements/tasks of your implementation based on projectlife-cycle phases (and you may support this with the aid of Gantt chart). It might be that youneed to present a scenario or predict economic conditions that will make it effective.The four main sections that you must tackle in your report are:1. Rationale: A definition and re-rationalisation for the innovation and its relevance toconstruction/project management. Give your innovation a name (20% of marks)2. Theoretical Underpinning: Provide theoretical/literature base to support yourinnovation, show weaknesses and show barriers to implementation; make explicitreference to the project management principles explored in this module) (20% of marks)3. Steps to Implementation: The steps, tasks or prerequisites for implementation (this canfollow a typical project or innovation life cycle). You can support this section by usingGantt chart to outline the implementation steps/tasks. (50% of marks)4. Critical Reflection: A critical reflection on your innovation showing awareness of theimpact on the organisation/project/industry (5% of marks)(NB 5% marks for structure and presentation)Additional Notes for the ReportIn addition to the requirements mentioned above the report must be supported by the use offull references. These must demonstrate an awareness of the key sources in your chosenarea, and the related project management tools/principles. It must also draw on relevanttheory and knowledge – which may include evidence from theoretical and/or empirical (case)studies.The report will provide information on all four sections above. You are not required torepeat everything from your presentation but you should aim to improve the first two sectionsin the final report based on the verbal feedback you were given after your presentation.It is recognised that some reports will be more theoretical than others depending on yourexperience, but all four steps especially your management of implementation must becovered well.
