r41 CQU ENGLISH – RESEARCH ESSAY GUIDE 1011.’syalitYLNGS41002 EAP2 Writing Research Essay Objectives Assessed: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14Due Block B, Week 4 Length 1200 words Weighting: 15%TASK: Write a research essay based on a problem and solution essay model structure (Note: Refer to your essay structure guide from Block A)TOPIC: Choose a topic of interest that is related to your further studies at university. Your teacher will help you with this. Please see the EAP2 ‘Sample topics’ guide for some ideas.Essay writing process: 1. Brainstorm ideas for problems and solutions. 2. Plan how your essay using the ‘Essay Plan Template’. 3. Research, using the CQU library website or Google Scholar as a resource. 4. Use examples and evidence from your research to support the points you want to make. 5. Write your first draft, using A.P.A Style Referencing. 6. Submit your first draft in Moodle. 7. Read the feedback from your teacher, noting areas to improve. 8. Edit your draft. 9. Submit your final essay in Moodie.Please include A.P.A Style Referencing: Research essays must include: • A minimum of 4 academic sources • At least 2 direct quotes • At least 2 indirect quotes • A Reference List • Correct use of paraphrasing to avoid plagiarismSubmission: • Submit each part of your essay according to the ‘Research Essay Timeline’ and the instructions given to you by your teacher. • First drafts and final essays are to be submitted in Moodie, which will run it through the TurnItIn plagiarism checking software. • Submit your first draft by 1.30pm on the Wednesday of Week 3. Students who submit late will receive limited, spoken feedback. It is better to submit an unfinished draft on time to receive written feedback on what you have completed. • Submit your final essay by 1.30pm on the Wednesday of Week 4.
