FIN 201 Financial Management-presentation and analytical

Purpose: Through this project, students are expected to demonstrate an all-around multi-aspect understanding of taxation & income statements, cash statements as well as financial ratios. The multi-aspect nature concerns both the quantitative skills with detailed and sound methodologies that yield correct results in every step, as well as, detailed discussions and presentation of the whole process and the results themselves. In practice, this means that he project is not about pure calculations and methodological steps only, it is also about proper presentation and analytical / detailed discussion of all the steps and results so that these are presentable to an executive board and/ or prospective investors. So you are writing a report-analysis of the tax-situation, and the cashstatement as well as ratios concerning your company, for a prospective investor (or for your executive board). Your company is a fictional one of your choice. The nature / industrial sector

of your firm will have an effect in the discussions you will provide in all parts (ie a heavy industry vs biotech vs hospitality will have different characteristics / benchmarks etc.). So to start with, in your introduction, state a fictional name for a firm as well as provide some

BRIEF details concerning it’s operations, activity, presence, services, products and history. Students should (equally weighted tasks with respect to grading):

1. Prepare a tax schedule and complete an income statement.

2. Following this and using Balance Sheet info and the tax schedule and income statements, students should create a cash statement for a firm based on the data provided in the handout , and will report where the company gains/losses money (operations? Investments? Financing?)

3. Finally, students are expected to analyze the prospects of the firm by calculating and judging a selection (their own) of financial ratios, concerning profitability, leverage, financial health. In doing so, they should compare some of these ratios to hypothetical average ratios of

comparable industries in the market (feel free to improvise on the numbers for the said comparable companies).

Financial Ratios:

Based on the previous data (and results that you calculate on your own), calculate 10 ratios in total. You should pick 2 ratios for each of the following 5 categories, and you should critically discuss the meaning of each ratio, the implications of the result. You should compare the ratio results to benchmark values as well as to a fictional or real ratios from a comparable firm (or market average values) and draw comparative conclusions. (If you use a fictional number, make up the number on your own however it is possibly easier to find an actual ratio as a reference.)
